I’m Denise Naguib, Global Vice President of Sustainability at Marriott International. The person supposedly responsible for ensuring our supply chains aren’t soaked in cruelty. Yet here we are, millions of hens trapped in barbaric cages, and I’ve done absolutely nothing meaningful to stop it.
We issued a glossy cage-free pledge. Then we ignored it. We brag about “Serve Our World.” Then we serve abuse.
And me? I keep delivering polished sustainability reports while animals scream in wire cages. Protests? Guests outraged? Employees ashamed? Not exactly my problem.
At Marriott, the cruelty is real. The commitment isn’t.

What would my childhood self
think of me now?
Would she be proud? Proud that I allow animals to be trapped, caged, and abused?

THE Disgusting TRUTH ABOUT BATTERY CAGE EGGS
-
Hens in cages suffer from limited space and restricted movement, which prevents them from engaging in natural behaviors and leads to high stress and frustration. Studies also indicate that caged hens have higher rates of Salmonella, a leading cause of foodborne illness and are more prone to disease than hens in systems that allow for greater mobility and expression of natural behaviors.
-
Each hen in a battery cage is given only 67-86 square inches of space—less than the size of a sheet of paper—leaving them unable to spread their wings or move naturally.
-
Caged hens are unable to perch, nest, dust-bathe, or forage, causing severe psychological distress and unnatural, repetitive stress behaviors.
-
Wire cage floors cause painful foot disorders, overgrown claws, and open lesions, while sloped designs lead to chronic discomfort and injuries.
-
Battery cages deny hens their natural behaviors, such as scratching, nesting, and foraging, leading to chronic stress, frustration, and harmful repetitive behaviors.
-
To maximize egg production, caged hens undergo forced molting by withholding food and water, causing severe stress, feather loss, and long-term health issues, including paralysis and death from dehydration.
-
Caged hens are subjected to constant artificial light to extend egg-laying periods, disrupting their natural cycles and contributing to bone fragility and overall poor health.
-
The EU banned battery cages in 2012, yet Marriott International still has no credible path to eliminate them from its global supply chain. More than a decade after announcing its cage-free commitment, the company has not taken the steps needed to deliver on that promise. Millions of hens continue to suffer, and Marriott’s guests deserve better.

My career as a hypocrite.
Appearing compassionate while doing the exact opposite, that’s the Denise Naguib brand.
Millions of hens living a nightmare of cruelty and abuse? Just another backdrop to my sustainability speeches. Why worry about cruelty when I can hide behind glossy reports and feel good buzzwords?

sustaining my greed
for twenty years
Maybe it’s a blood lust, maybe it’s corporate greed.
As Marriott’s Global Vice President of Sustainability, I could end this animal abuse tomorrow. But instead, I stall, I dodge, I spread propaganda to college students, and I let the suffering continue. Pretending to care is easier than actually caring.
Let’s be real: animal welfare is not my concern. My priority is Marriott’s image, shareholder approval, and keeping the “sustainability” brand shiny enough to distract people from the cages we still profit from.
Customers may demand change and the world may judge me, but as long as I’m still getting paid, why bother doing the right thing?
